DESCRIPTION:NVU’s Veterans Summit brings veterans\, their families\, and veteran service organizations together to build relationships\, strengthen connections\, and foster an enhanced support network in Vermont and beyond. However\, Vermont Vets Town Halls will be an exhibitor\, and Kristen will be there with information about upcoming town halls. (Kristen also works to help organize and raise funds for the Summit\, so will be there in that capacity as well.) \nThe Summit features: \n\nKeynote speaker Sebastian Junger\nBreakout sessions (past Summits have included breakout sessions on career opportunities\, trauma recovery\, women veterans\, complementary and alternative medicine\, opportunities to connect with policy makers)\n60+ veteran service organization exhibitors\nA complimentary lunch offered to all attendees\nA Stand Down—a grouping of coordinated services designed to assist homeless veterans and veterans with housing insecurity—which serves about 20 homeless veterans each year of the Summit

Other attendees should continue down Ethan Allen Homestead road past the community garden to the large parking lot (near #3 on this map). If it is comfortable and safe for you\, please consider carpooling\, as parking may be a bit tight. \nSeating & Shade: There will be folding chairs available. Please consider bringing your own camp chairs\, picnic blankets\, etc\, as those may be more comfortable for you. There are some lovely trees around the picnic shelter\, and we will have several canopy tents set up for shade. Attendees may also bring pop-up tents\, if you have one available to you and would like to ensure a shady spot. Tents may only be staked into the ground with stakes 6″ or shorter. \nParents: Your children are welcome to attend with you\, but when deciding whether or not to bring them\, please be aware that speakers will address serious topics and that this is not a rehearsed event. \nRain plan: In case of bad weather\, the event will be moved to October 3rd. \nCovid considerations: The event is outdoors\, to allow us to gather as safely and comfortably as possible. Jon served with the Marines between 2003-2007 and deployed to Haiti\, Fallujah and Ramadi\, Iraq. Since his discharge\, he has traveled extensively and worked with various communities to assist in the veteran reintegration process from paper-making to outdoor recreation and farming. In 2014\, Jon began to utilize the agricultural landscape as a classroom for community members interested in resilient food systems through service learning projects\, internships\, and site visits for K-12\, college students\, and military veterans. Kyle grew up in the small mountain town of Tinmouth\, Vermont. He joined the army in 2003 and served two tours in Iraq as a combat medic. He graduated from Castleton with a degree in criminal justice before joining Community College of Vermont as a Veteran & Military Resource Advisor\, and now as CCV’s Associate Director of Veterans and Military Services. After a period of service in the Air Force as a medic\, Marty McMahon returned to academic studies in literature\, language\, and rhetoric\, receiving an MA and an MLitt from Middlebury College. Marty has worked as a high school teacher\, a chimney sweep\, and a field technician in alternative energy (including working as a contractor and crew chief on the Navy TACTS program\, installing wind and solar systems on their off-shore platforms). He has taught at CCV\, Vermont College\, and Norwich (supervising cadets while teaching Military Literature to Special Ops personnel in their Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis online program). For five years at CCV he served as a Veteran & Military Resource Advisor while also facilitating Veteran Reading Group for the Vermont Humanities Council. \n  \nRain Plan: In case of rain\, the pavilion will provide shelter. Marty has worked as a high school teacher\, a chimney sweep\, a field technician in alternative energy (including working as a contractor and crew chief on the Navy TACTS program\, installing wind and solar systems on their off-shore platforms). He has taught at CCV\, Vermont College\, and Norwich (supervising cadets while teaching Military Literature to Special Ops personnel in their Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis online program) before returning to CCV as a Veteran & Military Resource Advisor. \nThis event is sponsored by Community College of Vermont. This event\, inspired by author Sebastian Junger\, aims to establish a greater understanding between local veterans and the friends and neighbors they fought for. \nRegister Now  \nIn the tradition of warrior storytelling\, veterans are invited to describe the pride\, grief\, rage\, or quiet appreciation of life that the war bestowed upon them – to share a story\, summary of service\, message\, letter home\, excerpt from a war journal\, or even the story behind a photograph. \nBased on feedback from both speakers and attendees\, this year there will be an optional question-and-answer period at the end of the event (only in Colchester). \nJon Turner will host the event. Jon served three deployments with the Marines between 2003-2007. Since his discharge\, he has traveled extensively and worked with various communities to assist in the veteran reintegration process from paper-making to outdoor recreation. In 2014\, Jon began to utilize the agricultural landscape as a classroom for community members interested in resilient food systems through service learning projects\, internships\, and site visits\, for K-12\, college students\, and military veterans. Jon is the founding and former chair of the VT state chapter of the Farmer Veteran Coalition\, recipient of the National Farm to School Innovations Grant\, Sierra Club Military Outings Leader\, and currently operates Wild Roots Farm Vermont in Bristol. \nThe venue is sponsored by Saint Michael’s College Veteran and Military Community Services and Student Veteran Association.
